MMA (Manual Metal Arc) / SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding, method 111) is a manual arc welding process using a covered electrode. An electric arc is struck between the electrode and the base material, melting both. The electrode coating produces slag and shielding gas, protecting the weld from contamination. It is one of the oldest and most versatile welding methods.
